Ruins of Poggioreale - Sicilia - Italia

In the night between the 14th and 15th of Jannuary 1968 the Valley of Belice was hit by an earthquake of 6,4' Richter scale. 15 towns were badly damaged and the towns of Poggioreale, Gibellina, Salaparuta and Montevago were completely destroyed. 370 people died and over 70.000 were left homeless.

A new Poggioreale was built on a safer place and eventually its citizens moved there. But, the original city is still standing and became a real ghost-town. An intriguing complex of decaying buildings and streets, slowly being consumed by the time.

Unfortunately, as many places on Sicilia, Poggioreale isn't really open to tourist visitation. As a matter of fact, an eventual visitor will encounter some forbidden entrance signs and some closed gates. But, if you're persistent and curious like me, you'll discover that the west entrance isn't blocked. But, be extra careful! The place has no safety regulations and you may encounter army personal playing tactical war games there.
